My intuitive, common-sense approach to the GRE has helped numerous students score 320+ since 2012. I emphasize comprehension rather than memorization: Instead of just giving you rules to remember, I help you figure out why they work. There's no magic formula that makes the GRE easy, but with my techniques, it won't feel too hard. A good GRE tutor should meet students where they are, and I always strive to do this. If you know a concept but struggle to apply it to certain tricky problems, I can help you with that. Alternatively, if you need something explained from the ground up, I can help with that too. I am flexible enough to work within your mental framework, rather than imposing something completely unfamiliar. My goal is to find explanations and methods that work for you, even if they aren’t entirely standard. I'll make sure to warn you if you're heading in a wrong direction, but for the most part I view GRE tutoring as an opportunity to help you leverage skills that you already have. I've found this to be a very rewarding process, and I think you will too!

Hi, I'm Erfun Geula, the founder of Compass Prep. I'm an honors Yale graduate with a perfect GRE score (Quant: 170, Verbal: 170), and I've tutored the GMAT and GRE full-time for the past 13 years and have over 15 years and 15,000 hours of tutoring experience. If anyone asks, I will proudly admit that I am a bona fide test prep geek. So much so that I was commissioned by McGraw Hill Education as the sole author of McGraw Hill’s Preparation for the GRE, a 500+ page comprehensive guide to the GRE. The book is now in its 8th edition and has sold over 80,000 copies worldwide. I was even interviewed by US News World Report for an article on the GMAT and GRE. Before focusing my efforts on GMAT and GRE tutoring, I worked as a GMAT Content Developer at a major test prep company, in which role I wrote, edited, and explained over 1,000 GMAT questions. Prior to this, I worked as Director of SAT Materials at another major test prep company, where I was involved in writing and editing thousands of SAT Verbal questions. Through these positions and the in-depth question analysis they required, I developed first-hand insight into the test makers’ perspective, the fundamental reasoning skills they assess, and the crafty ways they manipulate seemingly simple concepts into complex puzzles. I have been fortunate to help students across the globe, from management consultants in New York City to civil engineers in Saudi Arabia to Psychologists in Paris. I have been honored to have helped scores of these students gain admission to such prestigious schools as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Wharton, and Columbia, and I am confident that I can do the same for you.

It often happens that one's natural habits/practices form the strongest basis for excellence in a certain area -- a good reason for why none of my friends batted an eyelash when they heard I had begun training students in the GRE. Essentially the only books I ever read are the classics of Victorian age European and American literature, whose heightened word choices provide me with a unique appreciation/understanding for the vocabulary questions of the GRE (now a full 1/2 of the verbal questions!). But that's not all. I've had the privilege of training students in the GRE for around a decade, and am highly versed in the reading comprehension, logic, and quantitative questions. Perhaps that's why more than 60% of the students I take on are able to crank up their cumulative score by 12 points or more. Not only that, but 93% of my GRE students end up with thick envelopes -- the ones containing acceptance letters -- mailed to them by their first and second choices of grad school.

If you haven't touched math since high school, preparing for the GRE is extremely daunting. But we can go back to basics together, learn those math essentials, and every key skill and trick you'll need to ace then Quant side of the test. I bring my 10+ years of test prep to the table. I find standardized tests really fun because I enjoy figuring out the puzzle the test makers are trying to use to trick me, and I will bring some of that fun and passion to our sessions. I have several proven tricks to share when it comes to the Verbal side too. I took the at-home GRE in August 2020 to learn the ins and outs of this new process. I scored 169 Verbal and 167 Quant and use everything I learned to prepare for that testing experience in my sessions with students to help them get their desired score.
