Raul’s College Qualifications
Coaches professionally
I’ve successfully navigated the college admissions process and know what it takes to stand out. I hold four degrees—an MBA from Wharton, a Master of Laws (LLM) from Penn Law, a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from USC, and a BA in Economics from UCSB—and was admitted to Duke, UChicago, Columbia, Yale, Northwestern, NYU, USC, UCLA, Georgetown, and Wharton, among others. Coming from a non-traditional background, I had to craft applications that overcame challenges and highlighted my strengths in a compelling way. I specialize in helping students develop strong personal statements, strategic application narratives, and well-positioned extracurricular profiles to maximize their chances at top schools. Whether you’re aiming for the Ivy League or another highly selective institution, I’ll guide you through every step—from brainstorming essays to interview prep—so you submit an application that truly sets you apart.

About Raul
I earned a BA in Economics from UC Santa Barbara, a Master’s in Public Policy from USC, an MBA from Wharton, and a Law degree from Penn Law. My career has spanned roles at Teach for America, the Federal Reserve, Accenture Strategy, Bain & Company, and venture capital. I am currently a Vice President at a VC fund investing in life sciences, healthcare, and technology. My journey started in education. After UCSB, I joined Teach for America, teaching math just 15 minutes from where I grew up. During my third year and fourth year of teaching, I was also a full-time student at USC, earning my MPP with the goal of working on monetary policy at the Federal Reserve. That path led me to an internship under Janet Yellen at the Fed, where I saw firsthand the impact of macroeconomic policy. However, I ultimately decided that pursuing a PhD—necessary for real influence in the field—wasn’t the right fit for me. I pivoted to business, attending Wharton and Penn Law, focusing on finance and transactional work. Post-MBA, I joined Accenture Strategy’s M&A advisory group, helping Fortune 500 companies with acquisitions, due diligence, and post-merger integration. From there, I moved to Bain & Company’s Private Equity Group (PEG) and M&A practice, where I advised major PE funds on commercial and operational due diligence, gaining a deep understanding of how investors evaluate and scale businesses. Now in venture capital, I apply my experience across consulting, private equity, and corporate M&A to identify and support high-potential early-stage companies.
Why do I coach?
I coach because I know how hard it is to break into competitive industries without the right guidance. Coming from a tough neighborhood with no built-in network, I had to figure out how to navigate every step—from getting into top schools to landing roles in consulting, private equity, and venture capital. I coach because I know what it’s like to have no guidance. When I was trying to break into business, I didn’t have a single person to turn to—I had never even met anyone with an MBA or who worked in consulting, private equity, or venture capital. I had to figure everything out on my own, making mistakes along the way, not because I wasn’t capable, but because no one was there to show me the path. It all worked out in the end, but I wish something like Leland had existed back then. Having the right guidance wouldn’t have just made things easier—it would have helped me move faster and avoid costly missteps. That’s why I get so much joy when clients call me to say they got into their dream MBA program or landed the job they were chasing. Seeing their hard work pay off and knowing I played a small role in helping them get there is what makes coaching so rewarding for me. I know firsthand how life-changing the right opportunity can be, and I want to help others get there faster and with fewer roadblocks than I had to face.
