About McKay
I am a current genetic counseling student at Baylor College of Medicine (BMC) in Houston, TX. Prior to graduate school, I attended Brigham Young University in Utah where I studied Physiology and Developmental Biology. After learning about genetic counseling during my undergrad, I was certain that it was the career for me. As with many hopeful genetic counseling students, I felt intimidated by the low percentage of students who are accepted into programs each year. I was interviewed by 75% of the schools I applied to (6/8) and matched with one of the best programs in the nation, BCM. My success in applications and interviews taught me valuable tools that most other applicants do not use (hint: volunteering for Crisis Text Line does not help). I love helping applicants tell THEIR STORY, which is essential in getting interviews and matching with a program. As a recent applicant and current student, I can provide an invaluable perspective on preparing for and successfully applying to genetic counseling programs!
Why do I coach?
One of my passions is teaching and helping people reach personal goals! During my undergrad, I was a teaching assistant for the most feared course at Brigham Young University: CHEM 105. Many of the students I worked with started the course overwhelmed and hopeless, but were able to gain confidence (and an A) by the end. The genetic counseling application process is daunting and I felt like many of my chemistry students as I began the process. Fortunately, I had mentors in my own life who helped me gain confidence and succeed. I hope to help future applicants do the same.
