Luke’s Data Science Qualifications

Experience level: Associate

I currently work as a Data Scientist at a Health AI company, and have been in the space for over 6 years now. My experience spans a PhD program at Harvard where I focused on applications of machine learning in medicine. While at Harvard, I also worked as a teaching fellow for several Master's-level data science courses. I loved my experience teaching, especially the office hours where I was able to spend more one-on-one time helping students with concepts from the course. I started my data science journey basically from scratch years ago, and have since compiled a long list of resources and 'what I wish I'd known' type advice. This is a fast-moving field, and I'm excited to help anyone looking to navigate their future and improve their skills in data science!

About Luke

I'm a recent PhD graduate from the biomedical informatics program at Harvard, where I studied clinical applications of artificial intelligence. I've always been interested in medicine, but my plans changed from physician to research scientist when I discovered the potential impact of machine learning and data-driven decision making in the medical field. I finished my undergraduate degree in statistics/biostatistics and made the jump directly into graduate school. I began helping students prepare for and apply to graduate school as an undergraduate working in the Research and Writing Center at Brigham Young University and haven't ever really stopped. Since starting my graduate program, I've helped numerous students apply for and be accepted into graduate programs and even medical schools and residency programs. I love my work, but the best part of the day is usually something like going to the park with my young family.

Why do I coach?

As a pre-med stats major, I split my early years as an undergraduate between several departments on campus. I wasn't very outspoken and although I made some meaningful connections with peers, I felt like I didn't have much mentorship. Taking a little responsibility and a little courage, I cold-knocked on a professor's door and asked if he would let me do some research for his lab. Around that same time, I showed up to a student-led bioinformatics club. I started in both the lab and the club as a complete novice. Honestly, I didn't even want to show up some days because of how inexperienced I felt. But within these two groups I finally found people who were willing to patiently invest in my success. A few years later, I was a senior member of the lab leading other students into their first research projects. I feel like everyone has brilliance inside of them. Everyone also has fears and self-doubt. We can choose which we want to magnify in ourselves and in others.
