Ben’s Management Consulting Qualifications
Experience level: Consultant
Ben has helped clients get into these companies:
As the first hire Bain ever made at the University of Maryland, I feel your pain -- the school you chose doesn't really represent how smart you are or how good of a fit you'd be as a consultant. While hiring opportunities are rarely fair, I can help you put your best foot forward as you network with and break into the confounding and often frustrating world of consulting. Once there, I'm here to be your support in navigating staffing, how to carve out quality boundaries, and make the most of your time in consulting, whether you're planning on staying for 12 months or 12 years. I am a "boomerang" consultant and have balanced mission-first work and "work-first work" and can share the candid good, bad, and ugly about working in consulting. I was rated top in my class for multiple review cycles and have also been able to "downshift" and manage my career so that it's more sustainable.

About Ben
Ben Hsieh is a charismatic and empathetic leader, championing underrepresented voices at Harvard Business School where he is pursuing his Master’s in Business Administration. Most recently, he worked with the Maryland Governor’s Workforce Development Board building the roadmap for students in his home state to have stable, family-sustaining wages through the development of apprenticeships. Ben has built his career at the intersections of the non-profit, public, and private sectors, with a focus on equity of opportunity, environmental justice, and building up the professionalism of non-profits and governments. He believes that the training, development, and excellence that is considered a given within the upper echelons of the business can and should be brought to the masses through government and non-profit organizations. If we can train a philosophy major to become a McKinsey consultant, we must be able to train the next generation of nursing assistants, IT technicians, and craftspeople. No matter the job at hand, Ben’s passion has always centered on building and developing the people around him. He is a people leader, a first-class listener, and the world’s best hype man. He takes pride in bringing energy and vitality to all he does. As the first person to be hired by Bain directly from the University of Maryland, his purpose is to continue to prove to the world that while talent is equally distributed, opportunity is not. Ben is rooted in his family, including his 7 nieces and nephews all local to the DMV. He is eternally indebted to his parents, who sacrificed their successful careers in Taiwan in order for him to find not only success, but purpose, in the United States. He lives with his partner, Shaye, and is an avid patron of the theatre, a lifelong singer, and a tennis aficionado. On the business school front, Ben is proud and lucky to say that he gained admissions to the following programs: Harvard Business School, Wharton ($140K scholarship), Yale SOM ($50K scholarship), and UVA Darden (Jefferson Fellowship - full tuition).
Why do I coach?
At my core, I love connecting with people, imbuing them with confidence, and helping them connect the dots. I'm one of those weirdos that has always loved networking and I can't wait to help you crush your next steps. As the first person Bain ever hired from the University of Maryland out of undergrad, I know what it's like to be discounted based on your brand -- and I can show you how to shine through. After all, just because you also got a scholarship to go to a public university and your family couldn't help you pay for college doesn't mean you don't have the chops. As a rare departure from Bain directly into the social impact sector, I crunched the numbers to see how much of a pay cut I would be willing to take and wondered endlessly about how much happier I might be if meaning were central to my work. I want to help you find the balance of mission and earnings for you at the right stage in your career. As a soon-to-be graduate of HBS, I hemmed and hawed about the prestige uplifts of attending HBS or taking my scholarships at other incredible programs and graduating debt free. I can't wait to help you craft your story and gain admissions to the schools of your dreams, achieving things beyond your parents' and grandparents' dreams. Most importantly, as someone who navigated my mother's cancer diagnosis and eventual passing while in business school, I also want to help anyone who is struggling with something big -- how do you make sense of your career and business school decisions when nothing professional seems to be top of mind? Along my path, I've had the luxury of mentors and coaches and while I've slowly begun to pay it forward, I want to do so in a more methodical and bigger scale, which is why I coach.
