Have you ever wondered how students are accepted into the top Ivy League and other elite universities? The truth is, these acceptances are rarely a matter of luck. In my 13+ years as an admissions consultant, I’ve seen firsthand that those admitted to top-tier institutions have been preparing for years. Many begin as early as 9th grade (and in some cases earlier), carefully crafting a narrative that demonstrates consistent and prolonged excellence in a particular area—whether it’s mathematics, science, arts, athletics, or another skill where they are the one of the top few in their age group. Unfortunately, I often see students only recognizing gaps in their profile by 11th grade, spring of junior year, and then rushing to add extracurriculars and clubs to appear competitive. This approach, as I’ve witnessed time and again, can hurt more than help. It can make it seem like you’re trying to compensate for a lack of meaningful commitments earlier in high school, making it difficult for admissions committees to assess your true strengths and interests. The good news is, you don’t need to be the absolute best in one area to gain admission to your dream school—but you do need time to thoughtfully build your narrative. Ask yourself: if there were a proven, strategic approach to align your profile with what admissions committees are looking for, would you take it?
