About Amber Ashley
Hi! My name is Amber Ashley James, I was born and raised in West Palm Beach, FL but since high school I’ve lived in NYC, LA, Cambridge/Boston, Beijing, and South Africa. I’m a plaintiff’s litigator with a solo practice, and an entrepreneur in the wine industry. In my prior life, I graduated from Harvard College with honors in English, African American literature, and Mandarin. I then worked at Morgan Stanley in NYC for two years as an investment banking analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions group. I had a mini quarter-life crisis, turned down an offer to join a private equity firm, then moved to Beijing to work for an education start-up. While I was in China I helped high school students apply and get accepted to top colleges including Duke, Barnard, Columbia, Wellesley, and others. After my two-year stint in Beijing I returned to Cambridge to pursue my JD/MBA at Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School. At HLS, I was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, represented indigent criminal defendants, and acted in my first play. At HBS, I interned for a feminine care start-up, wrote for the HBS student newspaper, and researched the criminal legal industry. I’ve helped clients get accepted to Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Ross Business School, and other top graduate schools. In my “free” time I paint, practice yoga, enjoy great wine (I passed WSET Level 1), travel (40 countries and counting!), and play with my dad’s German Shepherd. I’m blessed to have had an unconventional but fun journey, and I look forward to hearing about yours soon!
Why do I coach?
I coach because I’ve seen the transformational impact education has had on my family, and I want to make that opportunity accessible to as many people as possible. Both of my parents were the first in their families to go to college, and their hard work and good fortune provided me the platform to pursue higher education and opportunities my ancestors couldn't have envisioned in their wildest dreams.
