Scored a 745 on the GMAT

Hi -- thanks for viewing my profile! I've been working with standardized tests since I was ten years old, so it’s safe to say that I live and breathe the standardized test way -- and with a 745 on the new GMAT (and a 90/90 on the new Data Insights section). I have the scores to prove it as well! I've been tutoring different standardized tests (SAT/ACT, APs, LSAT, GMAT, and GRE) for over 5 years now -- so I’ve got you covered on the content. Specifically with the GMAT, I spent some time with Prep for Success doing one-on-one tutoring for both GMAT and GRE. But beyond that, my lifetime of standardized testing experience has taught me what makes these tests tick. As a tutor, I always try to show my students how to ace the test every single time by implementing simple, repeatable strategies that will always get you to the right answer. I was also a theatre major in college, so I tend to keep sessions fun and light-hearted as much as possible. Thanks for taking the time to read my bio, and hopefully I'll see you around soon.

About Abigail

My journey with standardized testing began when I took the SAT for the first time at 10 years old -- I scored a 2390/2400 by the time I was 11, which got me into a fun summer program at Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth about philosophy of mind! Yeah, I was the kind of kid who talked about Descartes' mind-body dualism for fun. Then in high school, I attended a STEM magnet program and took classes like multivariable calculus and quantum mechanics, which is where my passion for math comes from. I had the privilege of learning from extraordinary math teachers who showed me how intuitive math can be. My dream was to become a neurosurgeon specializing neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's) -- until I discovered that I really dislike working in a lab! More power to the people who can survive micropipetting liquid for 40 hours per week, but that's not going to be me. Next, my friend convinced me to audition for our school play, and I quickly fell in love with theatre. Out of all the art forms, it's the only one that brings everyone together at a specific time to witness an ephemeral performance as a community. 15 months after my first show, I began my new life as a double major in Theatre Performance and Humanitarian Studies at Fordham University (with a double minor in Political Science and Peace & Justice Studies -- and on the pre-law track just for fun). Fordham's theatre program emphasizes becoming an interdisciplinary artist, so I ended up doing everything from producing to carpentry and electrics to intimacy directing. I eventually decided that I like watching theatre more than acting in shows (doing the same thing eight times a week gets boring for me), but I still hold a lot of love for the theatre world. I ended up taking the LSAT on a whim during my last year of college, since I figured law school might make sense for me. What I wasn't expecting was to love the LSAT as much as I do! What can I say -- poking holes in an argument will always be fun for me. I ended up serving for a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at an immigration legal services program, and I'll be doing another year with Quaker Voluntary Service as an assistant schoolteacher for pre-kindergarten to 6th graders. On the few occasions when I have any free time, I'm probably watching long YouTube essays on some topic I've never heard of (anything from sociology of the Internet to reality TV), reading one of my many books in a (slightly futile) attempt to reduce my absurdly large physical book collection, traveling and thrifting in some city where I convinced a friend to let me crash on their couch, or going to a contact improvisation dance jam. Graduate and law school are somewhere in my future -- but for now, I'm simply living life to the fullest.

Why do I coach?

To many, my trajectory in life may seem somewhat strange -- from STEM to theatre to law is certainly a unique path. But to me, the two core themes of my life have always been that I have a true passion for education, and I love people. In fact, that second theme was one of the main reasons I decided I couldn't pursue STEM as a career -- I would be too far removed from the people I was helping if I were to spend my life in a lab. Theatre focuses on building community more than most art forms, and law is a way of using my education to directly help people. Teaching is just yet another facet of those same passions! I began teaching in 2020 at an after-school program, which transitioned to operating as a in-person daycare during the COVID lockdown. In those stressful times, seeing the kids’ faces light up with joy after so many months of isolation made the hard work worth it. I eventually transitioned to primarily one-on-one tutoring, where I find so much fulfillment from getting to know my student and figuring out what works best for them -- different methods of explanation, taking on more of a drill sergeant vs. cheerleader role, etc. Since I started taking standardized tests with the SAT when I was 10 years old, that early experience truly cemented my belief: as stressful as standardized tests are, they are also completely conquerable with the right approach. With math, I’ve met so many students who insist that they’ll never like math, but it always seems to be because they simply don’t understand it. They think math is about rote memorization and boring formulas when it’s really an exciting adventure about tackling a problem using a vast toolbox of possible methods. And for verbal: people often read too much into the passage or paragraph, when the answer is more often to simply repeat back what the question asks of you & not make any assumptions. Outside of content, I also focus on test-taking strategy and how to think like the test makers want you to. My approach is to attempt to distill the intuition I've gained from 10+ years of taking standardized tests and impart them to others via simple, repeatable strategies that will always get you to the right answer. I also know that these tests are rarely fun, with all the stakes that are associated with performing well on test day. That's why I always try to lead with humor and kindness when teaching any standardized test. I treat tutoring more like coaching, where I strive to be more than just someone who lectures and dispenses knowledge. I want people to feel like they can come to me with anything and everything that's bothering them, so we can brainstorm potential solutions together and come up with ways to keep making that test score go up.
